Congress had taken the initiative to form a secular front at the Centre just for its existence after its drubbing in the assembly polls in three states, JD(S) leader and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda claimed on Friday.

Gowda who arrived here on his way to Kozhikode for election campaign, told reporters at the airport that the setbacks which the Congress had suffered in the last assembly elections in three states and Gujarat, had compelled it for such an alliance with other regional parties.
Congress had shown its readiness to forge alliances even with DMK, which it had earlier accused of involvement in Rajiv Gandhi assassination, he said.
BJP and Congress-led fronts were two sides of the same coin, "relating to corruption and anti-democratic activities", he said adding both realised that they could not win in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and were trying to consolidate more parties to their folds.
