School Education Department’s successive failure irked NCP ministers — Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and Water Resources Minister Ajit Pawar. They demanded to know in the weekly cabinet meeting why the minister in-charge Balasaheb Thorat and officials concerned did not make a strong case on the Best-Five system that the Bombay High Court rejected on Wednesday.

Bhujbal and Pawar, who represent the Nationalist Congress Party, lamented the embarrassment and asked Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to ensure stronger appeal in the Supreme Court.

Chavan defended Thorat, who has been holding additional charge of the education department since the formation of the government eight months ago.

The NCP asked the government to introspect what went wrong with the Best-Five formula as well as the schemes planned by the education department in past three years.
