The occasion was a meeting of the outgoing and the newly appointed city and district presidents.

The office-bearers were asked to constitute district and block-level committees to prepare the ground for party chief Sonia Gandhi’s tour of the State.

The party has chalked out a three-month programme to revitalise the organisation and Sonia’s tour is part of that exercise. She may address her first meeting in Kanpur soon.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Ashok Gehlot told newspersons that the Congress, which had supported the BSP and the SP, would go it alone in the assembly elections. He also said it was easier to discharge a minister’s duties than heading district and city units.

State Congress president Salman Khurshid said the outgoing district and city presidents should guide their successors. The Congressmen should work hard over the next six months to strengthen the party, he said. He added that a meeting of the frontal organisations would be held on July 19.
