Sharma was on his way for a medical check-up with his grandson when protestors, enraged over Congress' role in the cancellation of land allotment to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, attacked his cavalcade.

Sharma was deputy chief minister in the Mufti Sayeed government and later served as a minister in the Ghulam Nabi Azad government.

As locals hurled stones at his vehicle, the local police post in-charge whisked Sharma away on his motorcycle. The mob chased them but the duo managed to flee.

A posse of Rapid Action Force personnel was deployed to preempt further violence.

In another incident, people in Kathua opposed the 'Insaniyat Ki Rally' organised by ex-Congress minister Babu Singh late on Wednesday.

Sangarsh Samiti members burnt effigies depicting the Central government at several places in Jammu.

Meanwhile, doctors and university teachers took a protest march to Raj Bhavan to protest against police atrocities.
