Ramesh Chandra Jena, elected to the assembly from Sanakhemundi, was returning home after being felicitated at a function here late last night when two assailants opened fire at his vehicle, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dhananjay Swain said.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the assailants.

Jena, who is also president of Ganjam district Bus Owners' Association, claimed that the attack was a handiwork of his political opponents.

Some criminal cases were also pending against the legislator, police said.

The felicitation function was organised by the district Bus Owners' Association.
