Aware of the stiff saffron challenge, the AICC is planning formation of a series of committees this week to accommodate all shades and groups.

It could also be utilising the services of former Chief Minister S M Krishna, if he insists on returning to active politics as he has got "bored" at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.

But the message from the high command is clear that the 75-year-old leader would be one among senior leaders and not the leader, party sources said.

Chanting the mantra of combined leadership in Karnataka, the high command feels that there has been no towering personality in the state unit and therefore all have to fight jointly.

The decision not to project any leader in the state was taken despite the fact that there was growing realisation in the AICC that the Congress suffered in Gujarat polls due to it.

Detractors of Krishna have warned the leadership not to hand over the reins of the organisation to him as the party had lost power miserably under his stewardship in the last Assembly polls.
