The Haryana government was forced to postpone the first MCG meeting and the mayor’s election as the Congress was not able to put forward a candidate for the post on Monday.
The meeting was earlier scheduled to be held today.
After pushing the dates for the election, the always-confident Congress seemed apprehensive of horse trading and lacked confidence in their candidate against the opposition — Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Last ditch efforts by the party to finalise a name at the official residence of Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Delhi failed.
Senior Congress leader Rao Dharampal said, “I am quite apprehensive of the possible horse trading. Since the anti-defection law is not applicable on councillors as the Congress did not formally support them with the party name and symbol, they might indulge into this malpractice.”
