The deliberation over finalising name for mayor’s post seems to have entered its final phase with councillors attending a series of meetings involving chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and other leaders of Congress which claims to have majority in the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG).
A close-door meeting of 17 newly-elected councillors took place with the Member of Parliament from Gurgaon, Rao Inderjit Singh on Saturday evening as soon as he returned from a foreign tour.
Earlier on Thursday, 18 councillors met Hooda at his official residence in New Delhi. According to sources, Hooda and Rao Inderjit Singh are likely to meet in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the name of the party’s candidate for the post of mayor.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government is likely to announce the date for mayor’s election.
Congress leaders claimed that they have the support of 20 councillors and three of them could not join the meeting with the MP as they were travelling.
A couple of councillors, who were not present in the meeting with Hooda, attended Saturday’s meeting with Singh.
Singh earlier said that had the Congress fielded its candidates on party tickets, it could have swept the polls. The opposition party leaders have accused the Congress of being involved in horse trading to get the support of councillors.
