Congress to support DMK in TN

The Congress on Friday said it would extend "unconditional support" to the DMK for forming a ministry in Tamil Nadu but it was still not clear whether it would join the government or not.

CWC member in charge of Tamil Nadu Veerappa Moily, who called on DMK President M Karunanidhi on Friday morning, informed him of the party's decision to give unconditional support.

Later, speaking to reporters, Moily said the party would extend support to Karunanidhi in forming a ministry in the state.

The party also wanted the DMK to support the Congress in forming a ministry in Pondicherry.

The Congress legislature party is expected to meet later in the day to discuss the possibility of joining the government, sources said.

The DMK, which got 96 seats, needed another 22 to get a majority on its own. Its other allies, PMK and Left parties have already informed the Governor S S Barnala that they would extend outside support to a DMK ministry.

Meanwhile, newly elected DMK MLAs are meeting here today to formally elect Karunanidhi as their legislature party leader, who would later stake his claim to form a ministry, when he meets the Governor.
