The AIIMS administration on Thursday said that it had drawn up a contingency plan to ensure that services at the health institute were not affected by the doctors' strike against the move to sack its director P Venugopal.

The OPD services would function on a limited basis as part of the contingency plan to be implemented from Friday, AIIMS spokesperson Dr Shakti Gupta told reporters.

The patient intake will be decided on the basis of doctors available, he said.

Emergency services at the hospital have been suspended for the time being in view of the strike called by the doctors, he said.

"The Heads of Departments have assured us that the patients who have been admitted in the hospital will be looked after and that there will be no compromise in attending to them," Gupta said.

Over 700 patients were treated at the OPDs of the hospital by doctors who were not on strike, he said.

"There are about 1,200 doctors at AIIMS and the number of those on strike is being evaluated. Right now the situation is under control and we do not see any need to call doctors from outside the institute," he said.
