The LoC trade is once again under the scanner with the recovery of drugs worth crores near Uri in Baramulla, during routine checking.
According to local police sources a huge consignment of drugs, which according to initial reports was banned brown sugar, was discovered hidden under a consignment of almonds that arrived in a truck from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
According to sources, the truck was part of LOC trade and was supposed to be carrying almonds for a company in Bandipora sector of North Kashmir.
Police headquarters in Srinagar has confirmed confiscation but have not the confirmed that the contraband was drugs.
"A consignment was seized but tests are being conducted to find out what the contents are," a Srinagar based police spokesman said.
However, quoting Uri sub-divisional police officer Govind Ratan a national news agency said that police recovered114 packets of brown sugar from a truck at Salamabad trade facilitation centre in Uri on Friday, adding that the total weight of the seized contraband is around 100 kilograms, which is worth around Rs 100 crore in the international market.
Police sources said the truck has been detained and would not be allowed to cross over to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir unless legal procedures are completed. They said the matter will be taken up with cross-LoC trade officials.

Cross-LoC trade between parts of Kashmir began in October 2008.
In August last year, police recovered cocaine worth Rs 10 crore from a truck, plying on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route, at Sheeri in Uri sector.
