Traffic chaos on the PGI gate has caused deaths of three relatives of the PGI staff in road accidents in the past two years.

In a letter sent to senior police and administrative officials today, the Health Promotion Cell (HPC) of the PGI has said that since road accidents are the leading cause of morbidity, immediate attention is required.

“A tragic accident occurred outside the SGPGI gate, in which a young boy, Robin, son of staff nurse Sister Rosaline, lost his life on Monday,” said the letter from head of the HPC and department of gastroenterology Prof G Choudhuri.

“We have highlighted the issue of traffic several times and in a meeting held on October 8, 2005, representatives from the police, including IG Lucknow Zone and SSP were also present”, said Prof Choudhuri.

A campaign to make the area accident-free by putting up signals and glow stickers on the divider outside the SGPGI gate was undertaken.

As another family member of a PGI staffer died in a road accident on Monday at the gate of the institute, the doctors demanded intervention from the police high-ups.

The letter has been sent to all the officials of the police department and the district administration.
