After convicting four people arrested in 2007 narcotics case, Special Judge A.M. Dhawale asked the two women accused to call their lawyer , as he was to pronounce their sentences. Little did he know that one of them would give him a slip.
On Saturday, the special Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act court sentenced Paramshivam Nadar (38) and Kodiraja Thevar (34) to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and Rakhi Thakur (31) and Puja Jhadav (27) to six months’ simple imprisonment. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Thakur.
The four had been arrested on January 12, 2007, in Dahisar with 8.5 kg of marijuana by the Anti-Narcotics Cell. While Nadar and Thevar were in police custody since then, the two women were out on bail.
The judge asked Thakur and Jadhav to get their lawyer P.K. Kutty to begin arguments on the sentences pronounced.
After a while, Jadhav returned alone. When the judge asked her where Thakur was, she said Thakur might be still looking for their lawyer.
But minutes later when Kutty entered the courtroom alone, the judge realised that she had escaped. Judge Dhawale issued a non-bailable warrant against Thakur.
