Jammu and Kashmir cadre IPS officer Saji Mohan, who was arrested in the city on Sunday with a consignment of heroin, had earlier supplied narcotics in a north Indian city, possibly Delhi, according to the Mumbai Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad.
ATS chief K.P. Raghuvanshi said on Thursday that Saji, who was posted with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Chandigarh before he was sent on deputation to the Enforcement Directorate at Kochi in January this year, had supplied 10 kg of heroin in that city. Without specifying the city or the date or month of the supply, Raghuvanshi said Saji was in “the business” for a couple of months now.
“It seems he was running a drug racket and was actively taking part in the same,” Raghuvanshi said adding that the total volume of Saji’s stock seems to be much more than what has been recovered so far — a little over 39 kg.
A senior ATS official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed Saji had disposed of the narcotics consignment in New Delhi where he had a dependable network of drug runners. He had developed the network by virtue of his stint in the NCB where he had easy access to the North-Indian drug network, the official claimed.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of ATS Paramvir Singh said two of Saji’s former bodyguards from Chandigarh, both police constables, were being brought for questioning in a bid to unearth Saji’s network. It is suspected that the two transported the contraband to various destinations. Four more constables in Chandigarh were under the ATS scanner for being part of the same drug ring.
