A police sub-inspector (PSI) was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday while he was accepting a bribe of Rs5,000 from a property broker. ACB sources said the accused is PSI Devendra Ahir from the Sahu Nagar police station.
According to the ACB, the complainant, a property broker from Matunga Labour Camp owns a tenement in the area, where he had allowed a Ganpati mandal to store their goods.
Recently, the complainant asked the mandal’s volunteers to take back their goods, which led to an argument between them.
Subsequently, the complainant allegedly began receiving threatening calls and ransom demands, following which he made an application to the Sahu Nagar police. The police registered a non-cognisable (NC) offence.
ACB sources said the complainant wanted to convert the NC offence into a cognisable offence and approached Ahir, who was the investigating officer. When Ahir allegedly demanded Rs10,000 from the complainant, the latter approached the ACB and lodged a case against him.
Following an inquiry, the ACB lodged an FIR. ACB officers laid a trap by asking the complainant to pay Rs5,000 to Ahir. As Ahir was receiving the bribe, ACB officers closed in on him.
