A POLICE team of MP Nagar police station that had gone to arrest a wanted criminal was attacked by over half-a-dozen armed miscreants in Rajiv Nagar on Saturday night.
The miscreants attacked the policemen with swords and rods. The condition of one policeman, who was hit on the head, was reported to be critical.
The incident occurred when the police got information that Lachhu, an anti-social, was present in Rajiv Nagar. He was wanted in connection with an assault on one, Pramod, on February 26.
The miscreants surrounded Head Constable Vijayendra and Constable Rameshwar Mishra, when the two went to Rajiv Nagar to catch hold of Lachhu. Some 7-8 miscreants outnumbered the policemen. They began attacking the cops with sharp-edged weapons.
Mishra received an injury inflicted by sword in the head. The other policeman was also injured. Meanwhile, more police personnel reached the spot but by then the miscreants had fled the spot. The injured were rushed to the JP Hospital from where they were referred to the Hamidia Hospital.
The condition of Mishra continues to be critical. The exact number of the injured policemen could not be ascertained. Sources said three policemen were injured but the police said only two policemen were injured. An intensive hunt was launched by late night to catch the offenders.
A strong police force was deployed in Rajiv Nagar and efforts were on to catch the accused. The MP Nagar police are likely to register a case of attempt to murder in this regard.
