In two shocking cases of official apathy on Tuesday, the Noida police cut a sorry figure with the twin charges of bribery and laxity. In the first incident, a fruit vendor alleged that a policeman brutally thrashed him on Tuesday morning after he refused to pay him a paltry bribe of Rs. 30. Mohammad Wasim, who hails from Bihar, sells fruits near Sector 29.

"Everyone here pays Rs. 30 per day for putting a cart in Sector 29. On Tuesday, I refused to pay the daily bribe when PCR van number 5 came to collect it. Two officers started beating me black and blue. When I shouted for help, other vendors came to my rescue and supported me. The police officers, however, just left," said Wasim.

He was taken to district hospital for treatment. According to the doctors, he has sustained injuries both on legs and hands.

In another incident, the victim alleged that the officer who received the phone call on 100 refused to help them. They only reached the crime spot after five hours. Yamini and Amit Garg, who own a computer institute in Sector 27, saw three men looting their house in front of their eyes when they returned home.
