The police said two gunmen on a bike fired at Sangam Misra (45), from a close range as he was walking near the Kasturba Bhavan building. Mishra sustained two bullet injuries and died on the spot.

“Since nothing has been stolen from him, we are probing other angles of murder” said senior inspector Narayan Dumbre, of Gamdevi police station. There was Rs 2 lakh with Misra at the time of the incident, which was not taken by the assailants.

Santosh Yadav, a family friend of Misra said that he owned a construction firm — Ashtbhuja Construction Company.

An eyewitness said Misra, whose office is just near Grant Road station, came out of his firm with one of his relatives and a technician. After walking for a while the duo left for their respective destinations, while Misra walked to Kasturba Bhavan.

Kasturba Bhavan, where Misra stayed with his wife and daughter, is just three buildings away fromn Gamdevi police station. Incidentally, Misra’s daughter Puja (19) was calling him over his cellphone, when the incident occurred.

The police are investigating the possibility of professional rivalry behind the murder.
