Nearly a month after a woman's body was couriered from a Delhi based Transport Company, Delhi Police have issued instructions to parcel agencies in the city to maintain a register of senders along with copies of their ID cards.
"It has been noticed that the private courier services generally book goods or items to be transferred on the face value of the courier sender without bothering to verify his or her address. This could be a serious threat and courier services can be used for illegal activities," said a senior police officer. The order has been issued under section 144 of Crpc.
"They have been asked to keep copies of identification documents like election card, ration card, PAN card and driving licence of the courier sender for access by the police as and when required," the officer added.
A month back an unidentified man had parceled a woman's body through Milap Transport Roadlines from north Delhi's Lahori Gate to its branch in Kishangarh in Ajmer for delivery. The sender had identified himself as 'B' and it was to be received by himself.
During the investigation, police found that the courier company had no idea about the person who booked the parcel and the CCTV footage obtained from the courier agency was of no help to the investigators. "There are instances where criminals have used courier services to send incriminatory items, contraband and even bodies in the guise of courier," the officer added.
