Cops gun down criminal, another escapes

Police recovered .9 mm cartridges and a motorcycle from the site.

The slain criminal was identified as Manoj Tiwari alias Baba, resident of Badya village, under Barhalganj police station. He was an active member of the Brijesh Yadav gang and carried a reward of Rs 2,500 on his head.

Sources said police and members of the Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a combing operation in the area following a tip-off. Police personnel began intensive checking of vehicles at Bans Sthan under Chiluatal police station.

Around 8.30 am on Monday, they asked two motorcycle-borne youths to stop, but the latter opened fire on policemen and entered into the jungles of Tikria.

Later, police personnel of Pipraich and Chiluatal surrounded Manoj Tiwari. The criminal was killed when the police returned fire. Deputy inspector general BB Bakshi and senior superintendent of police Dipesh Juneja rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, the SOG picked up Dr BN Das of Chauri Chaura to interrogate him following allegations that he gave shelter to members of the Brijesh gang. Dr Das runs a private hospital in Dumri Khurd.
