THE DISTRICT police administration has come under fire for the death of an accused, Sunil Sahni, in police custody. Though the senior police officials have suspended police station incharge of Shahpur SP Gupta and police post incharge RK Singh and have lodged cases against them, the incident has once again tarnished the image of the police.

The SP City, who is incharge of the SSP office, has constituted a committee under Circle Officer Suryabali Singh to investigate the case but the post-mortem report of accused Sunil Sahni’s body has mounted pressure on the police officials. The post-mortem examination report says that the cause of death was brain haemorrhage, alleging that during interrogation, the police may have thrashed Sunil Sahni. Moreover, in a bid to cover up the incident, police officials of Shahpur threw the body just 25 metres away from the Shahpur police station.
The local people and several women saw the police personnel in their jeep, carrying the body of Sunil Sahni. Further, the prompt action of the Pipraich police in recognising the body compounded the problems for the police personnel deputed at Shahpur police station.
This is not the first incident when the Shahpur police station is in news for a custodial death. Earlier, four deaths in police custody took place in the same police station and the police station incharges were suspended. According to sources , head constable Parmanand Yadav, along with driver Prabhakar Pandey and Satyaprakash, picked up Sunil Sahni from his house near Bhedia Garh on January 23 in connection with three-wheeler theft. As no FIR was lodged regarding the theft;, after recovering the three-wheeler,the police did not show its recovery.
