Superintendent of Police Capt. M.M. Baig told Hindustan Times people from 12 villages gathered for the panchayat at Faridpur after the couple fled and got married.

They issued a diktat that the girl, Dalit, and her husband, a Gurjar, should not enter their village.

Sonu Gurjar had an affair with a neighbourhood girl, a major. Both fled on June 17 and got married each other against their parents’ wishes, police said.

“In this connection, the girl’s family also lodged an FIR against boy’s family and police arrested four people from the boy’s family,” the SP said.

Later, a panchayat was held Monday and Wednesday at Faridpur. The panchayat demanded immediate recovery of the girl.

“The couple approached the Allahabad High Court and managed to obtain stay on arrest orders. Both of them are over 18 years. Our officials were sent to the Panchayat. They told the Panchayat that the High Court’s orders should be followed,” SP said.

“We have kept our officials on alert after the panchayat order and the couple would be provided with security if the villagers do not allow them to enter. We may also apprehend erring panchayat members if any law and order problem take place,” the SP said.

Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said that presently, there are no threats to the couple and the matter would be sorted out amicably.
