Cops' action has sparked off widespread resentment among the people of the area and they are cursing the men in uniform for their unjustified action.

When HT Allahabad Live team visited the site on Thornhill Road on Saturday morning there was no trace of the tent which Aslam had pitched for his family last Sunday.

Inquiries revealed that cops first harassed Aslam and later forced him to wind up and leave the place. The poor man cried inconsolably and even pleaded to cops with folded hands to find his wife but all this was not enough to move the law keepers in whose eyes such kidnappings have no meaning.

Yes, in the case of the wife of a city businessman some time back they went all the way to Mumbai and ensured her return because her family members were connected to a senior police officer, quipped a youth living in the area. But Aslam had no such connections like the businessman. Moreover, he is a poor man who earns two square meals a day by selling Ayurvedic medicines on the road side. That is why cops have treated him so shabbily and were trying to cover up a heinous crime like kidnapping which in all probabilities was carried out to criminally assault the victim, said another resident, on condition of anonymity.

On last Sunday he had come to this city from Ranchi along with his wife Benazeer, 22, two-year-old son Aman, brother Azad, two sisters Afsana and Ruksana and brother-in-law Mohd Firoz. They pitched their tent on the roadside near DIG's office but refrained from putting up the medicines shop due to approaching Holi.

While Aslam was offering Namaz on Wednesday afternoon two inebriated men came to their camp in a Maruti van and asked Benazeer, who was sitting outside the tent, for a matchstick to light their cigarettes. When she told the men that she had no matchstick they reportedly asked her to get the same from the shop across the road. They hurled abuses when Benazeer refused to oblige them.

Angered at the sudden misbehavior Benazeer also called them names. After this the car borne men went away issuing threats to Benazeer.

Meanwhile, Aslam rushed out of the tent to see what the commotion was about. On being told the story by his wife he asked her to forget the incident without realising what was in store for him.

In the dead of the night on March 16/17 when Aslam was sleeping with his wife and child outside the tent the same van appeared on the scene. Two men got out with pistols in their hands and forcibly took away Benazeer in the van. Aslam who tried to save his wife was shown the pistol to keep shut.

After this Aslam cried for help but there was nobody to help him. He ran to the nearby DIG's bungalow but the sentry on duty directed him to rush to Civil Lines police station.

The Inspector though went around the area in his Jeep along with Aslam but failed to trace the kidnappers.
