In the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, burglars fled with Rs 20,000 in cash, jewellery and other valuables such as a cellphone and pen drive from victim DP Verma’s house. Along with the residents' welfare association (RWA) members and neighbours, the victim went to the nearby police station early Monday morning to register an FIR.

However, the police expressed helplessness amid shortage of staff and patrolling vehicles to keep a strict vigil in the area, said Harjinder Singh, who accompanied the group.

“Police negligence has emboldened criminals,” said Hemant Kumar, whose son's mobile was snatched in front of a police chowki last month, and the police did not lodge an FIR.
