Demand to restore BHU students’ union hots up

Security personnel of Banaras Hindu University resorted to mild cane charge to disperse a group of students staging a dharna, demanding restoration of students union in BHU on Tuesday evening.
Amid rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’, a strong group of students gathered outside the Hindi Bhawan on BHU campus and staged a ‘Kshatra Satyagrah’ on the main road for the restoration of students union here this afternoon.
The students were demanding restoration of students union close on the heels of other Central Government universities. They also demanded unlocking of Students’ Union Building to garland the statue of Chandrashekhar Azad.
As per information, a group of students resorted to stone pelting on security personnel who retaliated by mild force to disperse the agitating students. The battle continued for some time.
“Yes, we shooed away some irate students who pelted stones on the security guards from the dharna site,” said the chief Proctor of BHU, Prof SK Singh.
Awadhesh Kumar, a research scholar who led the dharna, said “We would continue our Satyagrah till our demands of restoration of students’ union is fulfilled.”

{{/usCountry}}Today's dharna was significant as it was after a long period that the students demanded restoration of students’ union inside the BHU campus.
However, some former student leaders had been demanding restoration of students union through dharnas and protests outside the campus premises.
Addressing a function of National Students Union of India in BHU on August 20 last month, HRD Minister Arjun Singh had said no decision could be taken for the restoration of students union in BHU as the matter was sub-judice.
