Anil, the 22-year-old victim was beaten after he refused the cops' order to shift some flower pots in Kotwali police station of Muzaffarnagar district on Wednesday evening.

A video of the beating filmed by a TV journalist who happened to be present at the station was aired by various TV channels.

"Appropriate action would be taken if he (the victim) lodges a complaint," said superintendent of police (city) Shravan Kumar, while dismissing it as a minor incident that occurred due to misunderstanding between Anil and the policemen.

Kumar also refused to reveal the name of the errant policemen.

"They (the cops and the victim) are known to each other for a long time and understand each other. However, they clashed over a minor issue of shifting some flowerpots," he said.

It was learnt Anil has made the station his abode for the past few years and was employed as helper by the policemen, whom he served tea, water and performed other odd jobs.
