Coronation Street goes ethnic the Hindu way

Britain's longest running and most popular TV serial will feature a typical Hindu wedding in one of its episodes.

It never could have happened when Britain's longest running and most popular TV serial Coronation Street began in 1960, a colourful Hindu wedding with the groom attired in sherwani arriving for the ceremony on a decorated horse and bride in heavily embroidered bright lehenga riding in a 1950s car, which suspiciously looks like an Ambassador.

But such a wedding in the serial in today's multi-racial British society is nothing unusual. Indeed it would help attract the Asian audiences and add to the ratings of the Coronation Street.

The 60th wedding in the annals of the serial features shopkeeper Dev and his bride Sunita tying the knot in a typical colourful Hindu ceremony. A Granada spokesman said the wedding scene is a "long way from our roots". The creation is really lavish and the studio has spent huge amount of money. A temple was built after the studio designer went round to see many real temples.

The episode is to be screened next month and is bound to attract most Indians in Britain. But the wedding, no one is saying, could end in the proverbial "they lived happily for ever".
