Corporate craving for ?clean? candidates

A WELL-written resume no longer guarantees an opening for entry-level positions in the corporate world, thanks to the growing involvement of youths in criminal activities and the tendency to submit forged marksheets. More and more corporate houses having regional offices in the city are now directing recruiting firms to get the antecedents of young applicants verified by a local private detective agency or even the police to ensure that they don’t hire staff with a criminal background.

It all started with stricter employee recruitment norms in the BPO sector a few year back when preventing data theft started becoming a serious problem among BPO outfits in Gurgaon and Bangalore. And while BPO’s started hiring services of private detectives to check antecedents of young entry level employees, the recruitment rules in the corporate world started changing for the better in the metros.

However, it took nearly six months for the manpower recruiting firms in Lucknow to get the message. The global practices in manpower recruitment are here to stay in the city and many recruiters are cursing some large business houses for increasing their operational costs for hiring the “clean” candidate.

He said verifying the criminal history or authenticity of the marksheets submitted by an applicant for a job in the corporate sector wasn’t an easy task. “One needs to first verify the residential address of the applicant and find out if he actually stays in the locality which is a time consuming process. Some corporate houses of late had even started ensuring that the applicant is a “genuine” Indian citizen by verifying the authenticity of his birth certificate.”

“Other problems encountered are verifying the authenticity of a marksheet as the university staff normally ask too many questions and sometimes even refuse to provide access to the applicant’s academic records,” the manager said.

The trend of recruiters now insisting on total scrutiny of the family background, academic records and possible criminal history of entry-level job applicants had trickled down from the metros where private detectives are increasingly being hired to take up verification jobs on a case-by-case basis, he said. A corporate house having its regional office in the city has of late started asking its senior management staff to keep a watch on the activities of entry level employees for at least six months as a precautionary measure to ensure that criminal elements are not his best friends when he goes out of the office in the pretext of meeting prospective clients.
