Several girls selected for the Kanya Dhan scheme in financial year 2004-05, have not received the cheques so far despite their running from pillar to post in the department concerned. On the condition of anonymity these girls alleged that cheques were not being issued to them because of their refusal to pay 'Suvidha Shulk'.

As many as 155 girls of Allahabad, 58 of Kaushambi and 145 girls of Fatehpur districts who were selected as beneficiaries under the scheme for 2004-05 had not been distributed their cheques till date.

Even, this matter was raised by MLC, Dr Yagya Datt Sharma in Legislative Council on January 17, 2006 under the Rule 105. He alleged that 21 girl students of Gandhi Memorial Inter College, Dara Nagar (Kaushambi), who belonged to BPL category and had passed 12th class examination the same year were selected for grant of Rs 20,000 each under the scheme for 2004-05. However, they were not distributed the cheques because of rampant corruption at various levels in the department concerned. The House was informed that cheques were released by the treasury but they got dishonoured. However, the Director of Education Office, Lucknow, in its order issued on December 26, 2005 stated of making available Rs 1,49,60,000 to District Inspector of Schools for 2004-05 with immediate effect for the purpose.

MLC Sharma and Ashok Dubey, divisional president of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh have alleged that touts were active in releasing of cheques.

Both have warned the DIOS and other officials to stop such practice otherwise the teacher leaders would organise their gherao to expose the misdeeds of the departments.

It may be mentioned that verification of annual income is the biggest hurdle in distribution of Kanya Dhan in the Allahabad. About 1400 applications are lying pending before the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) for the ambitious Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana scheme for current year.

When contacted, DIOS Mahendra Singh Yadav said the scheme was providing a golden opportunity to the girl students to pursue higher studies. He said that this scheme was being appreciated by one and all. 425 girls who passed their intermediate examination this year were given RS 20,000 each in the district so far. Soon as the matter pertaining to verification of parents' income was solved the remaining candidates would also be given amount.
