After Delhi 6, the Anarkali suit became a hit among Delhi girls and designers alike. The style, made popular by Sonam Kapoor, became the canvas for designer experimentation. But then came the corset suit and changed everything.

An improvisation of the Anarkali suit, corset suits come with a well-fitted structure. “It is a fitted top till the torso, attached with elongated panels or kalis,” says designer Mandira Wirk. The corset, being elastic, takes the shape of one’s figure.

In layman terms, it is a figure-hugging top with a traditional suit below. Designers’ take Aarti Mehra, designer, Study By Janak, says, “The corset suit look is both ethnic and modern, which makes it a popular pick among girls.”

Wirk says that since less is more in summers, corset suits will be super haute. “It’s definitely going to be a hot trend this season,” she says. Adds Mehra, “Since the choice of fabric varies from cotton and chiffon to georgette and linen, there’s no reason why these kind of suits won’t initiate a trend. Also, one can opt for an off-shoulder bustier and multiple panels or kalis if one wants.” Wirk elaborates on the adaptability of the trend, saying, “Since the style is both contemporary and traditional, besides churidaars, one can also wear them with straight pants. Also, the suit can be off shoulder, asymmetrical or one shoulder, with short sleeves or net.”

“Keeping the sultry weather in mind, light shades would suit this style the best. A combination of purple and white would look great. And since it’s a blend of the traditional and the contemporary, one can pair it with a churidaar or a pair of slacks,” she informs.

The trendsetter Aashima Handa, 19, a student at the College of Vocational Studies, has an Anarkali suit but now wants to buy a corset suit. She says, “I recently got an Anarkali suit stitched and fetched many compliments for it. Now I want to see what happens when I wear a corset suit. I’m sure it’ll create ripples in my college campus.”
