The business for cosmetic surgery is booming worldwide as more and more people become conscious about their looks. In India itself, it has seen a rise of 30 per cent to 40 per cent in the last five years. The latest in the field of cosmetic surgery is a treatment for droopy eyelids. Medically known as Blepharoplasty, it’s a surgery performed to remove the extra fat that accumulates around the upper and the lower eyelids due to aging.

Other causes for droopy eyelids are too much of exposure to television and computers, excessive intake of alcohol and weakening of the orbital septum. “It’s a very commonly-performed surgery these days. Even younger people are getting it done. It’s a scarless surgery and can range from Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000,” explains, Dr Lokesh Kumar, senior consultant, plastic surgery, Apollo Hospitals.

Blepharoplasty is advisable because excess skin around the eyes not only makes you look older, it can also impair the vision. During the surgery, extra skin around the upper and the lower eyelids are removed. Dr Ajaya Kashyap, senior consultant and chief of plastic surgery at Fortis, says, “Lots of youngsters with an oriental background come for this surgery. Also, people who have had a very stressful life tend to develop excess fats around eyes and undergo this surgery.”
