Rahul Tomar and Kiran Rathod, both 25-years-old, had been married for over a year, they said.

Rathod, who works as a teacher in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra had come to the city on Tuesday morning. The two met at night and went to a parking lot in suburban Malad, police said.

After some discussions they drew petrol from the fuel tank of Tomar's motorcycle on which they had travelled there and poured it on themselves, they said.

They then set themselves ablaze and sustained 50 to 60 per cent burns on their bodies, police said, adding that both were admitted to the Bhagwati Hospital in suburban Borivali.

Family opposition to their marriage is suspected to be the reason behind the couple taking the extreme step, they said.
