Court orders notices on a PIL over illegal mining

Karnataka High Court issued notice to the state government and other respondents including DC of Bellary district on a PIL seeking a direction to authorities to implement the Lokayukta report in order to check illegal mining activity.

Karnataka High Court on Monday issued notice to the state government and other respondents including Deputy Commissioner of Bellary district on a PIL seeking a direction to authorities to implement the Lokayukta report in order to check illegal mining activity.

The Lokayukta in its interim report submitted to the government on December 12 last had named several persons including politicians and officials for illegal mining in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts and called for action against them.

The report had also recommended for recovery of losses caused by them to the state exchequer.

The petitioner S Vasudeva submitted failure on the part of the executive and its inaction has enabled mine owners to plunder the mineral wealth of the state.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and Justice K L Manjunath directed the Government Advocate to take notice on hehalf of the state, Director of Mines and Geology and Deputy Commissioner of Bellary and adjourned further hearing.
