The issue came in the limelight when Mohd. Shahid, engaged in cow slaughter, was shot dead on Sunday morning as he refused to pay goonda tax of Rs 100 per cow to half-a-dozen miscreants.

Shahid’s brother Anees Ahmed, who sustained severe injuries in the
shoot out, is battling for life at a private hospital.

The murder has also angered local residents. They hold SHO Chamanganj Rehmat Ullah responsible for Shahid’s murder Ghasiana in Chamanganj. The murder has once again exposed the nexus between police and musclemen, they said.

According to sources, miscreants collect goonda tax from those engaged in cow slaughter. When both the brothers refused to pay the miscreants, they were shot.

Daily, hundreds of cows are brought to the city for slaughter. The main delivery
centres are Mohd. Ali Park (Prem Nagar corner) near Halim Primary and Colonelganj.

The main cow slaughter centres in Chamanganj are Ghasiana and Saidabad. Similarly, at Bazaria the major centres were Munnapurwa, Khalua, Nala Road and Bechuk Chakki. Other areas are Kanghi Mohal, Colonelganj and some pockets of Beconganj. Gammu Khan ka Hata is another place where cows are slaughtered.

Sources said those involved in the crime pay Rs 30,000 per week to the SHO for his support to run the business.

Cows were slaughtered on pavements in dead of night or in the wee hours, they added. Those giving protection to these people were equipped with sophisticated weapons.

Meanwhile, even after 24 hours of the killing, the police have not done much. SSP PC Meena said, “An inquiry is under way and the guilty will not be spared.”
