Party sources said the condition of Biswas remained critical and the doctors conducted a CT scan and kept him under observation for 72 hours in the ICU of a city nursing home.

Veteran Marxist Jyoti Basu, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya and senior party leaders attended the meeting cancelling all their poll related programmes.

The meeting was believed to have discussed who would be the in-charge of party's state leadership in view of Biswas' illness. The five-phase assembly election will be held in the state in April and May.

According to informed sources, CPI-M politburo members Sitaram Yechuri and Brinda Karat would be arriving on Sunday to visit the ailing leader.

Emerging out of the meeting, Basu told reporters that Biswas was not well. He said the doctors conducted a scan and would soon issue a medical bulletin on his condition.
