Gogoi was admitted to the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) April 2 after he complained of nasal bleeding.

On April 2, Gogoi returned from Bihar after attending the 21st party congress.

"His condition deteriorated on Thursday. We put him on ventilation support but there was no improvement," a doctor told IANS.

Born Sep 29, 1930 in Sivsagar in Upper Assam, Gogoi was associated with the All India Students Federation (AISF).

He joined the CPI in 1948 and was first elected to the Assam assembly in 1967 from Sivsagar. Gogoi was elected to the assembly five times.

Gogoi was also a minister of flood control and irrigation department in the AGP-led coalition government in Assam in 1996-2001.
