The CPM is in the dock over the killing of Chandrashekaran, a local leader who left the party to float a new outfit.

Besides the police arresting some Kerala CPM leaders, the murder also plunged the party into a crisis after Acuthanandan had openly contradicted party Kerala unit secretary and his rival, Pinarayi Vijayan, over the issue.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said Achuthanandan and other leaders have been directed to refrain from making public statements and all related issues will be discussed at the forthcoming Kerala state committee meeting. The CPM leader said the party condemned the killing and denied any involvement.

Karat alleged there was a concerted effort to malign the party over the murder.

"We don't believe that our party men did it. But we will examine it through our inter-party mechanism again," Karat told reporters, while briefing them about the two day central committee meetings of the party ended here on Sunday.

"This has resulted in huge profits for the private parties and massive loss to the government. The CVC has already referred the matter to the CBI for investigation. The PMO’s response (in a letter to Anna Hazare) to the allegations ... is not credible," he said.
