After the expulsion of Kannur district secretary P Sasi the CPM on Monday removed another party strongman Gopi Kottamurikkal from Ernakulam district secretary’s post citing misconduct and moral turpitude.

The party initially tried to hush up the complaint against Gopi. But many leaders complained that he continued his alleged relationship with a woman advocate despite many warnings. He was even accused of misusing the party office for this.

Two months back Sasi, an aide of state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, was expelled from the party. DFYI state treasurer V V Ramesan was also removed last month for securing a MBBS seat for his daughter after paying Rs 50 lakh capitation fees.

Interestingly all allegations being raised in different party forums are against camp followers of state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who is finding it difficult to come clean in the multi-crore Lavalin power scam. Pinarayi is one of the accused in the case probed by the CBI. With leaders belonging to Pinarayi faction getting dragged into controversies one after the other many of his camp followers suspect a "foul play".

Party elections are due in a few months. The organizational meetings and elections starting from the local committee will culminate with the party congress in April 2012 in northern Kozhikode. The party leadership is quite worried over factionalism rearing its head again in the state unit.

After its worst drubbing in parliamentary elections the CPM had prepared a rectification document to stem the rot_ party cadres and leaders were strictly told to follow this. According to it, cases of moral turpitude, alcoholism, nexus with landlords and businessman and anti-communist lifestyle wouldn’t be tolerated at any cost. Many attribute the series of disciplinary actions to rectification drive.
