Upset over the recent hike in bus fare and non-implementation of poll promises, a large number of leaders and workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) took out a procession and staged a dharna on the Shimla-Bilaspur national highway at Darla under Arki subdivision on Monday.
Raising slogans, the workers demanded roll back of bus fare hike and increase in daily wages in accordance with the poll manifesto of the ruling Congress government.
The protesting workers assembled outside the party office and took out a procession up to the bus stand and staged a rally.
Addressing the rally, party leader Ram Krishan Sharma slamming the Virbhadra Singh government for its anti-people policies said it was a matter of grave concern that instead of initiating needed lawful steps to check inflation, unemployment and other remedial measures to protect the crops of farming community from growing attacks of wild and stray animals, the Congress government has enhanced the salary and allowances of MLAs and ministers.
He said the hike in salary and allowances showed that the Virbhadra Singh government was not only taking anti-people decisions, but also failed to safeguard the interests of the common masses during the initial phase of its rule in the state.
Trade union leader Mast Ram said the Congress was backtracking from its poll promises and was delaying the hike in daily wages from Rs 150 to Rs 300 on one or the other pretext.
