In a firmer indication of the political line up for 2014 in Tamil Nadu, the CPM on Saturday formally announced its support to AIADMK candidate in the Yercaud assembly bypoll, scheduled for December 4.
This is the first definitive move that the Left will ally with Jayalalithaa for the 2014 general elections and comes ahead of the CPM’s rally in Delhi over the month end.
The timing of the CPM announcement is also significant, a day after BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai and left without meeting AIADMK supremo, Jayalalithaa, as was being speculated in some political quarters.
Modi had exhorted the party cadres not to rest and not to be complacent after the huge success of Tiruchirapalli rally.
The CPM’s formal announcement, made by state secretary G Ramakrishan, indicates that it has surmised that Jayalalithaa will not go with the BJP and is opposed to the Congress’s policies.
It would be a three front fight in Tamil Nadu with the BJP formation too in the race. The CPM statement also says the AIADMK too is opposed to Congress led UPA policies. CPM general secretary Prakash Karat is of the opinion that regional parties will play a bigger role in the national politics after the votes in the 2014 general elections are counted.

{{/usCountry}}According to Karat, chief ministers like Jayalalithaa and Naveen Patnaik in Odisha have performed much better than Narendra Modi in Gujarat.
Incidentally, Naveen Patnaik had broken off ties with BJP after staying together for several years in alliance in Odisha.
The CPM mentioned in its statement in Chennai that the AIADMK had also sought its support.
