The CPI-M on Saturday cracked the whip on its young MP from northern Kannur for his ‘Modi-model’ remarks. A.P. Abdullah Kutty was suspended for one year from the party for praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The suspension means Abdullah Kutty is unlikely to get a seat in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

“It is really shocking. I never did anything wrong. I said this in Dubai while replying to a question by an investor why he should invest in a state which witnessed 82 hartals in last year,” Kutty told the Hindustan Times.

The party had sought an explanation of his comments from the MP recently. But, in his five-page reply, Kutty had reiterated his stand and given Modi full marks for pursuing his development agenda. He said while he lauded Modi’s investment credentials he vigorously denounced his “communal agenda”.

While the CPM is not ready to separate Modi from his communal persona, Abdullah Kutty prefers to recognise both sides of the same personality — one pro-development, and the other communal.
