Craybas advances as Jelena quits

Unseeded Craybas knocked off 12th seed Jankovic in the first round when the Serb retired with leg cramps.

Unseeded Jill Craybas of the United States knocked off 12th seed Jelena Jankovic in the first round of the Amelia Island Tennis Tournament on Monday night when the Serb retired with leg cramps.

Craybas had been leading 2-6 7-6 4-0 when Jankovic quit, sending her to the second round.

The American, who last week beat Kim Clijsters in Florida, was one of four upset winners on the opening day's play at the $600,000 event -- the third oldest on the WTA Tour.

American Meghann Shaughnessy, Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine also scored first round upset wins over seeded opponents.

Ruano Pascual defeated 10th seed Nathalie Dechy of France 7-6 6-4; Bondarenko easily disposed of 13th-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-0 6-1 and Shaughnessy got the better of Marion Bartoli, the French 16th seed, 6-0 7-5.

The top eight seeds in the tournament all had first round byes, including top-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia, the world's seventh ranked player.
