POLICE SLAPPED criminal cases on the management of a chemical manufacturing plant in Renukoot township of Sonebhadra district in connection with the Wednesday’s gas leak tragedy.

On its part, the district administration has ordered a magesterial inquiry into the incident.

The gas leak in Kanoria Chemicals and Industries Limited (KCI) had claimed six lives and left over two dozen unconscious.

“Criminal cases, under Sections 287 and 304(a) of the IPC, were registered against the chemical manufacturing plant,” SSP, Sonebhadra Raghubir Lal, told the Hindustan Times on Thursday.

He confirmed that the Sonebhadra district magistrate had ordered a three- member magisterial inquiry. Additional district magistrate, Sonebhadra, Ram Surat Yadav will lead the probe team. He will be assisted by the deputy labour commissioner and the chief medical officer. Officials said the plant management agreed to pay a compensation package of Rs 4 lakh each to the family members of the deceased, besides giving a permanent job to one of the members in the plant.

There were reports that three more victims were referred to Varanasi for treatment.
