Criminal escapes from police custody

Superintendent of police N H Khan said Mandal was beaten up and seriously injured by angry locals when employees of the hotel raised an alarm after he made an abortive attempt to extort money from the manager at dagger point. They then handed him over to the police.

The police had shifted him to the hospital for treatment after taking him into custody. He gave the police the slip there.

A havildar and a constable who were on duty to keep a watch on the criminal were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, Khan said.
