AN ABSCONDING kingpin of the sensational Sarnath dacoity case was gunned down by city cops and sleuths of the Special Task Force (STF) in an encounter in Varanasi on Sunday night. Police recovered some looted gold ornaments, cash, a revolver and a countrymade pistol from the scene. The deceased criminal was identified as Bedi Rajbhar, carrying a reward of Rs 2,500.
As per information, station incharge of the Cantonment police station along with his subordinates were checking vehicles near Teligraph Office on Sunday night when two suspicious looking persons coming from the opposite direction on a motorcycle sped up their motorcycle to escape the police check.
The police team started chasing the fleeing criminals and informed the nearby police stations. A team of Sarnath police station and sleuths of STF laid a trap.
Sensing danger, the pillion rider opened fire on the police team. In retaliation, the police opened fire on the fleeing miscreants resulting in death of the pillion rider while another managed to flee from the scene.
The slain criminal was identified as Bedi Rajbhar, an absconding accused of the Sarnath dacoity case. The recovered items have been recognised as the looted ornaments during dacoity from a house in Sarnath.

In this connection police had arrested three persons including the servant of the family. Police had recovered gold and silver ornaments worth lakhs of rupees including cash money. The arrested dacoits were identified as Vinod Rajbhar, Manoj Gupta and Kishori Mehto, a servant of the family.
