Constable Rajesh Kumar of 158th Central Reserve Police Force battalion was on sentry duty at a camp at Hariganvan village near Kangan, 40 km from Srinagar, when he shot himself to death at around 10.45 am, the spokesman said.

He said reasons of Kumar taking the extreme step could not be ascertained immediately and a court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident.

The deceased jawan had joined the CRPF in 2004.

Suicides among personnel of army and other paramilitary forces have shown an increase this year, prompting the authorities to announce a string of measures.

CRPF has also announced a number of rehabilitation programmes to de-stress the troops, considered as one of the major causes of suicides.
