The incident took place around 6.30 am at the Food Corporation of India warehouse at Sangaiprou in Imphal West district, around three km from Imphal, officials said.

Around 143 CRPF troopers were deployed there to guard the warehouse.

“We have registered a case and an investigation is on to establish what led to the incident,” said N.Ingocha, officer in-charge of Lamphel Police Station.

The police suspect that a quarrel among the CRPF troopers over their duty period must have led to the shooting.

CRPF constable Fomin Mohan, 27, a resident of Kerala, is believed to have gone berserk following the argument killing three of his colleagues with his AK-47 service rifle.

The three troopers - Pradeep RV Nair, 28, and Shine Rajanna, 29, from Kerala and P. Ishwara Rao, 37, from Andhra Pradesh - died on the spot.

Mohan, who later shot himself, succumbed to his injury en route to the hospital, the police said. The bodies of the deceased will be flown to their respective states on Tuesday. The CRPF has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
