If recently compiled data by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is any indication, Gurgaon's groundwater level is reaching alarming levels and there's serious concern over its sewage water treatment capabilities.
According to the report's conservative estimate, Gurgaon in 2021 with a projected population of 3.7 million will have a water demand of 666 million litres each day. The city will generate 533 million litres of sewage and its capacity to treat waste water will fall short at 255 million litres a day.
CSE's 7th State of India's Environment (SOE) report, 'Excreta Matters', details the water-sewage situation in 71 cities across India, including two cities in Haryana - Gurgaon and Faridabad.
The report has sourced information from official data and RWAs. It underlines that water extracted in Gurgaon is more than thrice the amount of water replenished by rain.
The centre will be organising a few workshops over its study across the country beginning from Gurgaon on April 12.
"There is no data on the number of borewells functional in Gurgaon (estimated to be about 20,000) or how much groundwater is being extracted. It is estimated that groundwater levels are falling a further one-three metres below ground level each year," said Bharat Sethi, CSE deputy programme manager (water).

{{/usCountry}}However, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) claims the report has failed to check large-scale illegal borewells in privately-developed townships in the city. It says many of the borewells have dried-up and the residents have to depend on private water tankers.
