Police had to use teargas shells to disperse the clashing groups in the border town of Mendhar, around 200 km from here.

A district official said that the curfew would continue on residents of Mendhar until tensions could be eased by bringing members of the two communities together to resolve the issue.

A section of Hindus were protesting against the alleged forcible occupation of their land by a section Muslims. The latter claimed that the land was theirs.
