The official machinery curbed people’s movements to preclude chances of demonstrations that it fears might take place because of two deaths in Baramulla, in the past 48 hours.

The shutdown call, given by the hardline faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, will continue till Saturday.

Fayaz Ahmad Khanday (23) was killed in Baramulla on Monday when the security forces fired at mourners carrying the body of a 13-year-old schoolboy, Faizan Ahmad, who was drowned in the Jhelum allegedly after a police chase.

A bullet hit Khanday in the chest when the police allegedly opened fire at the funeral procession, which was marching towards the deputy commissioner's office.

Referring to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s reported statement that Kashmir is an “impediment” between India and Pakistan, moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said: “The world has understood the issue of Kashmir. It is now impressing upon India to engage Pakistan and resolve the Kashmir issue as per the wishes of the people here.”

Markets, banks and other business establishments remained closed.

Just after a major reshuffle, the state government ordered yet another round of transfers of senior police officers. Those shifted include two deputy inspector generals, seven senior SPs and three deputy SPs.
